This miniature depicts the Russian “Unicorn” howitzer, 122mm, model of 1838 — an old Russian smoothbore artillery piece of the howitzer type. The “Unicorn” was invented in 1757 by Russian artillery officer M. V. Danilov together with M. G. Martynov, and adopted into service under Count P. I. Shuvalov; the gun took its name from the Shuvalov family crest, which bore the image of a mythical unicorn. The cannon model is fully mobile — the wheels and barrel move.
