This is a take-apart piece — the rider can be removed from the horse. The miniature depicts a knight in tournament armor from the second half of the 15th century, armed with a special jousting lance fitted with an iron, crown-shaped tip known as a “coronel,” its shaft made of solid oak. The medieval joust was a martial contest among knights in Western Europe, meant to display the combat skill that made knights the era’s principal fighting force; tournaments began in peacetime as a way to train in the arts of war and let seasoned knights show off their skill and valor.
