This is a double-sided pendant, a stylized replica of a 10th-century ornament found at Gnezdovo (Smolensk region), among the contents of one of the hoards there. “Lunnitsa” refers to the waxing crescent of the night’s luminary, the Moon. It is the tender, tranquil moon that is held to be a symbol of the feminine principle, just as the fiery sun symbolizes the masculine. The Lunnitsa talisman is, at its root, a women’s amulet; in fact, it has been known for thousands of years not only among the Slavs, but also in Eastern Europe, Ancient Egypt, and the countries of Asia.
