Size: 57 × 51mm. This is a stylized 11th-century Norwegian fibula. A fibula is a metal clasp. Unlike most modern brooches, fibulae serve simultaneously as an ornament and a practical fastener: a pin with a “catch” for its sharp end lets it secure clothing. Fibulae of various shapes were in use from the Bronze Age all the way to the late Middle Ages.
