Chrismon Bronze Pendant

The Chrismon symbol is often set within a laurel wreath, and this is no accident: tradition holds that the Chrismon favors those who strive selflessly for victory. The Chrismon, or chi-rho, is a monogram of Christ’s name, formed from the first two Greek letters of that name, Chi and Rho, overlaid on one another. The Greek letters alpha and omega are often placed at the edges of the monogram; this usage traces back to the text of Revelation: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, says the Lord, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Historically, the best-known use of the chi-rho was on the labarum, a special type of ancient Roman military standard. The Emperor Constantine the Great introduced it to his armies after seeing a sign of the Cross in the sky on the eve of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. The labarum bore the Chrismon at the top of its staff, and on the banner itself the inscription “Hoc vince” — “In this sign, conquer.”
